What we check during your visit
We look for redness swelling discharge or irritation that may indicate an active ear infection.
We assess whether the blockage is caused by wax fluid inflammation or the eardrum itself.
Using a medical camera we check the eardrum for fluid pressure changes or infection behind it.
Ear infection FAQ
A few of the most common questions we hear about ear infections and how ClearEar can help.
How do I know if I have an ear infection or just wax
Wax build up usually causes a blocked feeling and reduced hearing with very little sharp pain. Ear infections often cause stronger pain especially at night along with a feeling of heat or pressure.
During your appointment we examine the ear canal and eardrum with a medical camera so we can see if the problem is wax infection or something else.
Do I need a GP referral to book
No referral is needed. You can book directly for an ear infection assessment in our Dublin city centre or Lucan clinic.
If we feel you need GP or ENT follow up we will explain this clearly and summarise our findings so you know what to tell your doctor.
Can you prescribe antibiotics for an ear infection
ClearEar does not replace your GP service or hospital care. Our role is to examine the ear explain what we see and advise on the next best step.
If we think antibiotics or other prescription medicines may be helpful we will advise you to contact your GP or out of hours doctor the same day.
How long does an ear infection appointment take
Most appointments take around 20 minutes. This includes a short history of your symptoms the ear examination and time for you to ask questions.
Can children be seen for ear infections
Ear infections are very common in children. We can often see older children and teenagers for assessment.
For very young children or if your child seems very unwell we may recommend GP or paediatric review instead. We will always put your child’s safety first.
Is an ear infection contagious
The pain itself is not contagious but some of the viruses and colds that trigger ear infections can pass between people.
Good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact when someone has a cold or flu can help reduce the risk of ear infections especially in families with young children.
