“I had no idea there was a foreign object in my ear.”

I thought my ear was blocked with wax, but it turned out a small metal object from a piercing had been lodged in my ear for weeks. The clinician explained everything clearly and removed it quickly with no pain at all.

“They responded immediately when I was in pain.”

I had severe ear pain just before the weekend and needed urgent help. ClearEar responded straight away and gave me an appointment the very next day. The ENT identified the issue quickly, treated it on the spot, and within an hour my symptoms were gone. I could hear clearly again with no medication needed.

What you need to know

Need ear wax removal?

Ear wax can be stubborn. While we all produce it, excess ear wax can cause significant discomfort, pain and hearing loss. ClearEar offers microsuction ear wax removal services 7 days a week.

Is ear cleaning advisable?

Ear wax is part of our immune system. Our ears naturally produce earwax to protect the ears by trapping dust, debris and microorganisms. In most cases it will migrate out of the ear without any intervention. However, ear wax cleaning is advisable if excess wax is causing symptoms or complications.

What happens if ear wax is not removed?

Ignoring build-up of wax can lead to impacted ear wax. This can cause ear discomfort or pain, feeling of fullness in the ears and/or decreased hearing. It is important to seek professional help if you require ear wax removal.

What is Ear Wax?

Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a natural, sticky oil made by glands in your ears. It helps keep your ears clean by trapping dirt and dust.

It’s important not to try to remove earwax yourself because you could hurt your ears. Instead, it’s best to let a hearing care professional handle it safely. Sometimes, you might have too much earwax resulting in a blocked ear. This can happen for different reasons like having narrow ear canals, getting older, using cotton swabs, or wearing hearing aids. If you wear hearing aids, it’s especially important to clean them every day to prevent earwax from causing damage.

What to Expect

Ear Health Checkup

At ClearEar, we conduct a thorough medical history to assess your current symptoms. We will then ask for your permission to examine your ear(s) using the our digital video otoscope or microscope. This allows us to examine the canal and eardrum in high definition and magnification, clearly identifying the cause of your symptoms.

Hearing Test

A hearing check involves placing headphones over both ears. The Ear Care Practitioner will play a range of different sounds at varying loudness and pitch through the headphones. The aim of the test is to establish the quietest sounds you can hear and identify any potential hearing weakness. You may experience discomfort to some loud or high pitch sounds in the test, but this tends to be temporary.

Gentle Microsuction Wax Removal

Ear wax removal may be necessary to relieve fullness/blocked sensation of the ear, and/or to enable otoscopy and hearing assessment. If the wax cannot be fully removed, a second or third appointment may be required with further softening of the wax for a few days between visits using alternative softeners as advised.

Two methods of wax removal may be used during your appointment, microsuction and/or manual removal using an instrument.

Why Remove Ear Wax?

Ear wax might seem odd, but it’s actually vital for protecting our ears. It acts as a natural defense, shielding delicate structures from harmful particles and bacteria, and even helps keep our ears clean.

However, when ear wax builds up too much, it can cause problems like pain, blocked ear, tinnitus, or temporary hearing loss. That’s why it’s crucial to regularly remove excess wax to maintain ear health.

While some may attempt to remove wax themselves, it’s safer and more effective to seek professional help. Improper removal can lead to hearing damage or ear canal injury. By ensuring proper removal, you can preserve good airflow and protect your hearing.

Remember, taking care of your ears is essential for maintaining overall hearing health. Schedule regular ear wax removal to keep your ears clean and your hearing sharp.
